Airport Recommendations

Looking to book a flight to attend the Hurricane Valley Singles Conference?

Here are the closest airports to Hurricane:

St George Regional Airport (SGU) – 23 miles

Cedar City Regional Airport (CDC) – 44 miles

Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) – 147 miles

Insider Travel Tip: St George and Cedar City are smaller airports and have limited flights, but might be a quick option if flying from Salt Lake City (SLC).

More affordable flights will be found flying into Las Vegas (LAS), and then driving (less than 2 hours) up to the St George/Hurricane Area.

Hotel Recommendations

Since the conference falls in July, do anticipate tight hotel inventory if you book last minute. It’s best to book sooner than later, and then coordinate with others later to share rooms to split costs. Use the Hurricane Valley Singles Conference 2024 Facebook Event Page to coordinate rooms with others.

FAQ

(Frequently Asked Questions)

LOCATION & SPONSOR

Q: Who sponsors the Hurricane Valley Singles Conference? Is this an official or unofficial church activity?

A: Hurricane Valley Singles Conference is an official church activity sponsored by stakes in the Hurricane Valley Coordinating Council, with support of other stakes in the St George Area of the Church of the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Q: I’m from out of the area, so where again is Hurricane Valley, Utah?

A: Hurricane Valley is located at the gateway of Zion National Park near St George, in Southern Utah. This new Hurricane Valley Singles Conferences aims to be the largest Southern Utah Singles Event of the year!

AGE

Q: What’s the age range for the Hurricane Valley Singles Conference?

A: Hurricane Valley Singles Conference is for ALL Singles (31 on up). To ensure all singles feel welcomed and included, we are offering an unique two track schedule (31-55, 55+) at the dances, workshops at different buildings, with other optional activities in closer age ranges than the two tracks, as well as plenty of opportunities for all singles activities for everyone to connect. So something for everyone.

We expect half the crowd to be 31-55, the other half 55+ with 500-1,000+ attending.

Q: What’s the difference between this Hurricane Valley Singles Conference (31+) in July and the St George Single Adult Conference (46+) back in April?

A: Here in Washington County, we are blessed this year to have two singles conferences to attend. Back in April, St George Single Adult Conference (ages 46+) was sponsored by the St George Area Coordinating Council.

This July, the Hurricane Valley Singles Conference will include all singles (31+) including Midsingles 31-45, sponsored by the Hurricane Valley Coordinating Council. Both conferences complement and support each other.

Q: I just aged out of the YSAs, in my early 30s as a new Midsingle, and a little leery attending the Singles Conference. Will there be people of my age actually attending?

A: We get that dipping your shoes into the Midsingles scene after YSAs can seem like a big jump, but no worries. At this conference, we have multiple optional meetups, restaurant groups, just for the younger Midsingles (30s crowd) , so you can meet and socialize with like-minded folks before heading off to the bigger activities with everyone else. Also included at the 31-55 Dances, there are separate Younger Midsingles Lounges 31-45 and Speed Mingling rounds just for the 30s to connect with other 30s. For Sunday we are also teaming with the St George Midsingles Ward for joint Sunday Services. Stay tuned for details. We got your back.

Q: I am older in my 60s and beyond, will people my age be attending this conference?

A: Yes, plenty of singles 60 and wiser will be in attendance. To ensure you are able to connect with other singles of a similar age, both the dances and workshops will be separated 31-55, 55+ meeting in separate buildings. (Sunday will be combined) . In addition, the 55+ Dances will have Speed Mingling Rounds in smaller age ranges too, plus there are optional activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, Big Shots (Top Golf) just for 55+, in addition to all the “All Singles” activities.

Q. I’m in my mid 50s and on the cusp between the both tracks (31-55, 55+)? Where do I fit in, and are there crossover opportunities to meet people of all ages, or at least people in their 50s?

A: The two tracks 31-55, 55+ are more about vibe to help people feel comfortable. So for people a year or two on the “ish” either way, can go to the track that best suits them. Do take advantage of smaller group activities that crossover the age range like the Thursday Dinner Groups (including one for 50-65) , as well all the all-age singles activities that are also offered at this conference.

WEATHER

Q: Why is this conference being held in July? Are there cooler, indoor options throughout the conference?

A: Yes! The schedule was chosen for July to ensure all the teachers have an opportunity to attend a singles conference that doesn’t interfere with their work schedule.

This conference is a very chilled conference…literally. While the afternoon heat can reach 100 or above, no worries… Most outdoor activities (hikes, kayaking, paddleboarding, outdoor pickleball, etc) will be held in the morning or evening with temps in the 70s and 80s. On Friday Afternoon at the beach party at Sand Hollow, there will be plenty of tents for shade, and opportunities to get wet to cool off. At the same time, there are other fun indoor activities in the AC at other locations. So everyone should be more than chilled, cool, and collected at this year’s conference.

PURPOSE & BELONGING

Q: What's the purpose of this Singles Conference? Can't I just meet people online instead?

A: There is a power, support, and strength in numbers when everyone as singles (in this very family oriented church) meets physically in the same place together, that you can't necessarily experience online. Moroni 6:5 states, "And the church (Singles) did meet together oft, to fast and to pray, and to speak one with another concerning the welfare of their souls." The purpose of this Singles Conference is not just to be a "meat market" to only find that one, but also to spiritually and socially recharge, renew, and be uplifted with others who "get it". For many singles, in order to be spiritually fed, we first need to be socially fed. Many singles come looking to make new connections, new friends (of both sexes), and would benefit from seeing your example, your strength, your testimony.

Of course for many, attending a Singles Conference is to cast a wider social net and increase your dating pool. While some may find success using online websites and apps, others find that after making tons of new real world friends at the Hurricane Valley Singles Conference, they are able to follow up with them online afterwards much easier, and have more authentic connections, than just randomly meeting people online.

Q: This Hurricane Valley Singles Conference sounds ah-maz-ing and I really wanna go! But I really don’t know anyone, and I’m a little nervous going alone, any suggestions?

A: First of all, you are not alone in feeling this. Many are attending an event like this for the first time. No worries… there are several smaller activities planned throughout the weekend, where you have ample opportunity to chill and meet people in smaller group settings.

You can also coordinate rides, rooms, flirt with others, or make friends beforehand by joining the Facebook Event Page.

Ultimately we all need to stretch, be proactive, and get out of our comfort zone, and within no time, you will be able to mingle with singles from all over Southern Utah and beyond.

Q: This Hurricane Valley Singles Conference sounds great, but “I don’t do well” in large groups. How am I able to meet others in smaller group settings?

A: Even though the Hurricane Valley Singles Conference will be one of the largest Southern Utah LDS Singles Events of the year, don’t let the size intimidate you. This year, there are several smaller group activities and meetups planned throughout the conference giving plenty of opportunities to help you break out of your comfort zone and connect with new people from all over Southern Utah and beyond.

Also, there are some who feel more comfortable to help out in some way "behind the scenes", at the conference, as a way to socialize in a smaller group setting. After you register, if you would like to help in some way, let us know via email, and we can put you to work.

Q: I would love to attend, but can’t afford to attend this conference. What should I do?

A: We understand some people are in financial need and got your back. You can partially attend the conference to suit your budget. However, we are not turning anyone away based on financial need. All are welcome!

If could like to attend to conference but can’t afford it, email us at hurricanevalleysingles@gmail.com with your name and stake, and we can add you to the registration list to attend activities included on the all-weekend ticket. Activities that are extra for everyone else are still considered out of pocket expenses for you (i.e, kayaking rental or other side activities).

Those who are the financial need list will be considered the same as those registering at the door, and may need to be on standby for some smaller activities. (i.e. Speed Mingling)

Q: Can I see my options or activities I signed up after I registered? Can I make changes to my sign-ups after I registered?

A: Yes! You can Log In to your Eventbrite account, click on Tickets, Select this conference, and you should be able to see your sign-ups. If you need to make edits, you can, if space is still available.

Q: What’s the refund policy?

A: There are no refunds being offered. But, you can always sell or transfer your spot if need be, to someone else, typically via Venmo or Paypal. If you need to sell your spot, you can post on the Facebook Event Page.

Once you sell your spot, just notify us their name, address via email at hurricanevalleysingles@gmail.com before the conference, so we can update the

registration list.

Q: Why do I need to register now instead of just showing up at the door?

A: Some smaller group activities have limited spots available and are gender specific to ensure balanced M/F ratios. The sooner everyone registers, the more bells and whistles we can provide. If everyone shows up last minute, it makes budgeting and food difficult to plan and coordinate. So it's best to register way in advance, rather than just showing up at the door.

Q: How do I register?

A: It’s best to pay online beforehand on the Registration Page.

SPEED MINGLING

Q: What is this Speed Mingling thing? How it does work? Do I have to speed mingle?

A: Speed Mingling is just a low-key, no-stress way to meet new people and have face-time with singles you may not get a chance to on the dance floor or with the big crowd. Think of speed mingling as a simple ice breaker activity.

During the rounds (1 guy and 1 gal), we will be doing 2-3 minute rounds where you will get to chat with 12-15 people (not the entire room) so only 30 minutes total per round, where the women once seated, stay put, and then the men rotate every 2-3 minutes.

Friday Night Speed Mingling Schedule:

North Bldg (31-55)

8:45 - 9:15 pm (47-55)

9:30 - 10:00 pm (37-49)

10:15 - 10:45 pm (31-39)

11:00 - 11:30 pm (Wild Card 31-55)

South Bldg (55+)

8:45 - 9:15 pm (70+)

9:30 - 10:00 pm (60-75)

10:15 - 10:45 pm (55-63)

11:00 - 11:30 pm (Wild Card 55+)

Saturday Night Speed Mingling Schedule:

North Bldg (31-55)

8:45 - 9:15 pm (47-55)

9:30 - 10:00 pm (37-49)

10:15 - 10:45 pm (31-39)

11:00 - 11:30 pm (Wild Card 31-55)

South Bldg (55+)

8:45 - 9:15 pm (70+)

9:30 - 10:00 pm (60-75)

10:15 - 10:45 pm (55-63)

11:00 - 11:30 pm (Wild Card 55+)

There will be ample space between couples, so that it’s not “Scream Dating”, as well as a list of fun get-to-know-you questions, if you need a little help in the conversation. Remember to keep the topics fun and light. Please do NOT ask uncomfortable questions that’s put people on the hot seat such as “What’s your story?” or “How long have you been single?” or “Why are you still single?” Discussing serious or heavy topics can be saved for later after the speed mingling round. This is not an interview or an interrogation.

You will need to check-in at the Speed Mingling Registration Desk (next to the Speed Mingling Lounge, in order secure your spot to attend your speed mingling round. It is important to sign up for Speed Mingling beforehand as part of your registration using the Eventbrite Sign Up Link. Space is limited to 30-40 couples per round.

If there is space available, any woman on the Waitlist Line can join the speed mingling round if they bring a guy friend with them to the round. If the speed mingling round starts and there are a few women waiting on the Waitlist Line and there is still space available, women in the Waitlist Line can join the speed mingling during the session once we get a few more men to join us, so that there was always an even M/F ratio. After people are the Waitlist line get seated, others on Standby can join in if space is available.

With so many singles attending, we anticipate all the rounds to fill up with even M/F ratios.

After each of the Speed Mingling sessions, the entire group will be escorted to the Reception Area where everyone can meet and mingle with those you didn’t get a chance to speed mingle with, and that’s a great opportunity to exchange any contact info at that time. Or you can connect with them again on the dance floor or throughout the conference.

HOUSING & TRANSPORTATION

Q: I’m traveling from outside of the area and not familiar with Hurricane or St George. How should I get around the different events?

A: Since the events are held in Hurricane and St George, it’s best to carpool with others going to the various events or share renting a car. Or you may choose to share an Uber or Lyft to get around. Using public transportation (bus or train) is not recommended in our area. This conference will often be using three church buildings all on the same street for some Friday and Saturday events. Even though they may be a few blocks away from each other, it may make sense to drive to the different building if needed.

Q: How do I coordinate with others in sharing rides or rooms?

A: The easiest way to coordinate with others to share rides or rooms on the Facebook Event Page.

Q: Can I stay at members’ houses?

A: Due to the size of the conference, we can't accommodate everyone in members' house during the Hurricane Valley Singles Conference, but a few members are offering their homes.

So we encourage you to use the Travel Page on the conference website, and you can coordinate with others to share rooms on the Facebook Event Page.

Q: Are there going to be Conference Airbnbs?

A: Yes! Multiple Airbnbs and other vacation rental homes are available to coordinate with others. Refer to the Travel Page on the conference website for details.

TIPS

Hurricane Valley Singles Conference Tips

This is the "Hurricane Valley Singles Conference Tips" Page giving suggestions and helping you to better get "the lay of the land" to make your experience at the Hurricane Valley Conference as smooth, stress-free, and fun as possible. Below is an initial list of DO's and DONT's. Good times...

DO follow the insider driver and parking directions on the conference website to get to the activities faster, so you can't get lost.

DON'T…assume since the three church buildings that are used for the majority of this year’s conference, that they are walkable to each other. The buildings are a few blocks away, far enough that driving to the new building may make sense.

DO arrive early and arrive on time for each event, especially the Friday and Saturday Main Events and Dinners. These shouldn't be viewed as something you show up fashionably late, as dinners end promptly in order to get ready for the amazing dances.

DON'T show up at 11 pm with your entourage thinking that's when things really get started. When in fact, you've missed most of the evening already.

DO realize that different singles are approaching the conference differently. Some are serious in looking to find someone to date. Some just got widowed or divorced, and need just support and friendship. Others just want to meet new friends. Others want to be spiritually fed by attending the workshops and meetings. So the conference is what you proactively make of it.

DON'T assume that if you sit by the sidelines, it's up to the other person to make the effort. It's up to you to reach out as well. Or don't assume the conference is entirely a "meat market". We are all individuals first with individual needs, and singles second.

DO make it a goal to meet and talk to people you have never met before, including those from out-of-state (or country). Not everyone you meet is from Hurricane or St George. In fact, a large group roughly half, won't be local from Washington County. So Team St Geezy talk it up with Team Arizona. Team Arizona meet more Team SLC peeps. Team SoCal meets the Cedar Krew.... you get the idea.

Secondly, DO take advantage of the all new smaller group activities, mixers, speed mingling, meetups, after-parties, etc being offered this year, as ways to make new connections.

DON'T think if you just chill with your group the entire weekend, that somehow you will be able to expand your social circle. :)

Ladies...DO be proactive and help the Conference Committee out by inviting your local guy singles in your area to the conference, even if you are not personally interested in them on a romantic level. Your local frog can someone else's Prince Charming and their frog may be your Prince Charming. :) It takes a village, people...and most guys are not as connected to social media or email lists and may be unaware of the conference, or they plan last minute to attend the conference.

So the guys will respond positively (and feel appreciated) to personal invites from you. Real world (face-to-face) invites are the most effective, followed by inviting them to the Hurricane Valley Singles Conference 2024 Facebook Event Page. If you want more guys to attend, it's up to the women (who often plan with all their girlfriends 6 months beforehand) to invite the men.

Ladies...DON'T over-exaggerate the ratios, just because a certain guy is not taking to you. :) While some smaller group activities may skew more gals than guys, or often vice versa with more guys than gals, OVERALL this conference will thrive to have a 60F/40M ratio or better. Some sign-ups require a 50F/50M ratio. If more women invite their local guys, that ratio will get even better. :)

Ladies...if you want the guys to approach you, DO de-clump with all your BFF's from time-to-time (and not all dance or sit together) so that the guys will be more apt to talk one-on-one with you (if you want).

Guys...DO show some courage and ask the ladies to dance (even if she's a 7 and you only date 10s) :) Remember, it's just for one dance and helps you and your mojo, while giving her a chance to meet new people. You never know, your initial impression of her being a 7 might change by the end of the song.

Same concept applies throughout the conference for guys to bust a move, and get to know the ladies.

(This is for everyone) DON'T come across as creepy or violate personal space or immediately dive into talking about some drama or inappropriate topics or prior relationship(s)/marriages within the first 5 minutes… :) We can all leave the TMI moments for later (after the conference).

It is also considered inappropriate to put people into the "hot seat" by asking the following questions: "So, what's your story?", "How long have you been single?", or saving the best (worst for last), "Why are you still single?" People will naturally be more open in sharing more about their life when they know the conversation won't turn into an interrogation.

DO remember it's important to keep conversations light, neutral, fun when meeting people for the first time at this conference. It's not about being fake or putting on a front, but it's about being approachable and sharing your positive personality.

DON'T (and it's worth repeating) DON'T mention anything about your ex (ex-spouse and/or ex-dating partner) at the conference. Bashing about your ex or diving into why prior relationships didn't work out, creates shame spirals and focuses on the negative. Perhaps focusing on the positive and remembering all the great things YOU have to offer others, can attract the right people in your life.

DO feel free to ask any questions, concerns, comments, or feedback to any of our Hurricane Valley Singles Conference Hosts which will have a "Host" badge during the conference, and they will be more than happy to assist you.

DON'T assume that if there's something or a situation that needs attention, there's nothing you can do to change it. Feel free to ask our Hosts to assist you.

(For guys)…DO put forth some effort in attire and grooming. That means get a hair cut and wear attire you purchased within this decade, and that properly fits you. :) If the ladies are making an effort, so can you.

DON'T assume the same-o shirt and white sneakers will win over the ladies… :)

DO keep a positive attitude and roll with it. Sometimes, the schedule may be off, or an activity is not meeting your expectations. Keep in mind, our organizers have worked extremely hard for countless hours for months on end to make one of the largest Singles activities of the year in Southern Utah possible with the resources they have been given. See the glass half full.

DON'T feel the need to cherry-pick and over-analyze about the what-ifs. Just leave your worries behind and enjoy this awesome conference and all the great and with-it people that are attending from all over the U.S. and beyond.

How to Build a More Authentic and Meaningful Singles Program

Part 1: Ministering

Part 2: Outreach

Matt Campbell has been instrumental in helping the establishment of singles programs in the Church across the world, for over 15 years. Back in 2006 after attending a Single Adult Conference for the first time in San Diego, and seeing no one of his age attending, it was at that moment, he had one of most spiritual moments in his life, and realized the need to create the first ever Midsingles Conference of the Church in 2007 in Huntington Beach, California. With the backing of his Bishop, the Huntington Beach 1st Ward (first ever Midsingles Magnet Ward of the Church) hosted that historic conference with over 1,100 attending from all over the world.

From that first Midsingles Conference led to other areas hosting similar Midsingles Conferences and activities, and the creation of Midsingles Wards in the Church which became official as part of the Church Handbook in 2013.

Branching out beyond serving just with Midsingles, Matt Campbell has also served regionally on the Regional Single Adult Committee planning activities for all ages, as well as activity groups for each “decade”. He has served in both the Orange County Singles Conference in varying capacities since 2010, and the Huntington Beach Midsingles Conference since 2007, along with speaking at other singles conferences across the Western U.S. Behind the scenes, he assists singles reps and Church leaders across the world, in finding ways to better minister and serve singles in their area.
